Why is memorizing scripture important?
We are told to "hide" God's Word in our hearts (Psalm 119:11) so that we do not sin against God. The way to avoid sin? Memorize Bible verses so that they are with you in times of temptation. Jesus himself used memorized scripture against the devil (Matthew 4:1-11). We should follow His lead and do the same.
We are told that we must be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in us (1 Peter 3:15). We need to be ready to defend our beliefs. In order to do that, we need to know the Bible. There is no better way to know scripture than to write it on our hearts with memorization.
Finally, memorization can help in understanding. If you memorize a verse, you can spend time throughout the day meditating on it and praying to understand it. It's significantly more convenient if you can bring the verse to the forefront of your mind, without having to pull out a paper or phone or anything else.
Often, Christians claim they are "not good" at memorizing scripture. No one is when they first begin. It's a skill that you foster over time. There are many ways to get better at memorization but the best is repetition. Keep going over the verses until you know them. There isn't a secret way to instantly memorize something, it will always take time but it will always be worth it to you. Nothing is better than having God's word with you when you need them (which is all the time)!
We always encourage you to keep working at this and continue growing in your faith!
